Year Six Discover Life as a Doctor
Year 6 were incredibly privileged this week to have the opportunity to speak with Sofia Gonzalez Chacon, who is paediatric surgeon working in the NHS. She discussed her journey to becoming a doctor in her home country of Venezuela and how, due to the deterioration and instability of the political and economic environment in her country, she made the incredibly hard decision to leave and seek asylum in the UK. She discussed the importance of following your dreams, and how at times this may seem too hard and impossible – but always get back up and try again. The children asked some challenging questions about her work and journey to the UK, including; “What did it feel like when you lost your first child in surgery?” “How does it feel when you save a life?” “What is it like being an asylum seeker and leaving your home?”
The class are hugely grateful to Sofia for giving up her time to talk with us, and for being so informative and open about her life and work.
